Editor’s letter DEAR READERS, This year Britain celebrates the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen, and we hope you will join us in marking this joyful occasion. As the longest-reigning British monarch in history, she has seen momentous changes in the 70 years since she ascended the throne in 1952. Her coronation in 1953 brought together a country still emerging from the devastation of the Second World War, and she has continued to be a steadfast symbol of national pride. We are devoting much of this issue to articles about the Queen, including an appreciation of her life by Thomas Blaikie. Ciar Byrne visits one of her favourite homes, Balmoral, and we take a look at her lifelong companions – her dogs, horses and colourful hats! Our travel editor, Mary Novakovich, visits some of the places, at home and abroad, that have shaped the Queen’s reign. Also in this issue, Jill Kennington, a famous model in the Swinging Sixties, tells Maureen Paton about how her tempestuous life led to her not receiving the same adulation as Twiggy or Jean Shrimpton, and how she bounced back by becoming a photographer. We talk to a designer about the challenges of building his first show garden for the Chelsea Flower Show, and have delicious recipes that use unusual regional British cheeses. So get out the bunting, raise a glass and join us in wishing Her Majesty a very happy Platinum Jubilee! Maxine Frith, Editor What’s new on lady.co.uk WIN! Editor’s letter

DEAR READERS,

This year Britain celebrates the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen, and we hope you will join us in marking this joyful occasion.
