Editor’s letter

DEAR READERS,

When does summer officially start? According to ever-reliable Google, on 21 June. For me, it begins a couple of weeks earlier, when our local village cricket club plays its first home game, my parents celebrate their wedding anniversary and I begin to think of salads rather than stews for supper.

At The Lady we are looking forward to both the coming of (hopefully) sunny weather, as well as celebrating the Platinum Jubilee.

Actress Rula Lenska has spent most of her adult life in the public eye. She talks to Richard Barber about the joys and pitfalls of fame and why she still feels the call of the stage as well as the small screen.

Also in this issue, our travel editor Mary Novakovich has picked the best options for villa holidays with friends and family. If you’d prefer to stay closer to home, a weekend trip to Manchester is highly recommended, with its rich blend of cultural, historical and culinary delights.

Ciar Byrne explores the beauty of Hever Castle and its famous gardens, while our recipe feature this month takes a look at the food of Tibet. My husband recently purchased a heart-rate monitor, allegedly for medical reasons. He seems to use it most for a parlour game in which he makes me put it on and he then says annoying things to work out what will get the highest result – please don’t try this at home!

However, it has made me realise how stress can affect us both physically and mentally – not to mention maritally. Our health feature this month looks at the causes of stress, how to avoid them and what you can do if you are suffering its ill effects.
