The poem ‘Brian’ is a slightly revised version of ‘Clinical Depression’, which appeared in my collection Point of Sale (Carcanet 2000) and which seems to fit into the story of the present book. For the same reason I’ve taken the liberty of reprising ‘Mini Van’ from Careful What You Wish For (Carcanet 2015) – and which gives me chance, too, to thank Neil Astley for including it in Staying Human (Bloodaxe, 2020). 9
