Editor’s letter DEAR READERS, I have never been one for binge-watching television for hours on end, but give me a good book series and I can easily get hooked. This happened recently when my niece recommended the novels of Scottish crime writer Christopher Brookmyre – instant addiction followed. His many books have attracted legions of fans, including our interviewer Maureen Paton. She talked to him about his writing process, combining crime with comedy and his writing partnership with his wife. Talking of comedy, actress Caroline Quentin has long been one of my favourite funny women. She has perfect comic timing on stage and small screen, and is self-deprecating and down-to-earth behind the scenes, as our feature reveals. Also in this issue, Mary Novakovich explores the rugged French island of Corsica while Roderick Conway Morris takes a look at the works of the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. There are now more than 15,000 centenarians in the UK, so what is the secret of their longevity? Genevieve Roberts asks the experts about the key to staying happy and healthier for as long as possible, and looks at the communities around the world that seem to have many of the answers. Sheila Hancock refuses to be constrained by age, and in our extract from her new memoir she explains how she will continue to challenge those who write off women – and men – because of their date of birth. Meanwhile, please welcome our new film critic, Larushka Ivan-Zadeh, who reviews the best new summer movies. DEAR READERS,

I have never been one for binge-watching television for hours on end, but give me a good book series and I can easily get hooked. This happened recently when my niece recommended the novels of Scottish crime writer Christopher Brookmyre – instant addiction followed.
