Notes. Accessibility. Although the question of accessibility is more considered to-day than it was some years ago. ire must say there is still much to be desired in this respect. so far as the majority of cars are concerned. The impro,·ement.- ll'hich ha1·e been made of late ,ears have been rather in the 1rn1· of indi1·ictual a,,essibilit1 of the variou parts; collecti,·e accessibility has made ven· small advances indeed. Tn other words. 1rhi'e. sa,·: c,irhuretters thernseh'es f\re more easih· taken to pieces ~nd put to!!ether al!ain than 11·as the case not ,o ven· long ap-o. if it comes to taking down the carburetter when it is in its place on the car, it may be a ver\' difficult and laborious task. because it is almost impossible to get at it ll'ithout unshipping a number of other parts. In fact. it is not too much to say that in many cases accessibilit~ as applied to the 1rhole of the parts most like\ to require adjustment in a car is less rather than greater than. it used to be. This is a matter for which the designers must not be entirely blamed. The engine has been gradually boxed in by the under casing. "·hich is a really necessary and altoiiether desirable fitting. and by the inside 1rings which are no1,· so often and also most desirabh· fitted to the front mudguards. In a few cases, the , car is really designed for the under casing. ancl everything is accessible more or less easily from the top.
ft is no light task to arrange for each part to be acce sible, because. in addition to the carburetter. the contact-maker, and pump, the little forest of inlet, exhaust. and water pipes and control conne, tions. \\'e now have a magneto machine. and as often as not the box containing the steering mechanism. ~ ow. it is most necessary that each one of these things should be easily get-at-able. and it should be possible to adjust or take down a,w one of them 11 ithout the necessity for upsetting the others, but there a1e fe1r cars in 11·hich it is the case. and C\'en in those fe11· it too often happens that one or more parts ha,·e to be taken right a1rny before it is possible lo put in a ne11· valve spring or grind in the valves. Perhaps the most accessib'e disposition of these parts- all of which require attention periodically. though it ma\' be that Yery long periods elapse before some of them ha1·e to be touched - is to haYe all the rnlves on the left-hand side of the engine. and to devote the right-hand side to pump, commutator. magneto. and steering box. There are certain objections to this. and a still better method is to ha1·e the vah·es on the top of the c,·linders. and the vah'eshaft in the same position. too.
When 1Ye come backlrnrd from the engine. there is not much cause for complaint. though here again such_ rhings as clutch adjustment or inspection plates to the gear box are often made unnecessarily inaccessibleanother instance 1rhere a Yer\' small alteration in the disposition of the parts would make them easi ly get-atable. Further back still. the uniYersal jo.ints of the propeller shaft and the pedal brake adjustments are often most difficult of access. and much could be clone in this 11·a,· b" pro,·iding really full-sized hinged tra1~ doors in the floor. As a rule. thes,e trap doors are much. too small, and are often put in the wrong position_ One is made to Jo duty for two. and so on. As to lubricators cunningh· hi'd and grease cups which can only be got at by an acrobat. they are more or less prevalent on the majority of cars. and a great deal of unnecessary trouble is given in consequence. We have often advocated the clesirabilitY of an ac,e. sihilitY cnmpet1t10n. Very little has been clone to encourage this most important improvement. The Automobile and Cycle Engineers' Institute brings the subject into its discussions at almost e,·ery meeting. though be\'Crn1l. the expression of pious opinions as to its desirabilit~· little has been done. \Ve should be Yen· !!1: >cl to see the matter taken up bi' th :\utornobile Cl11h.
