Olympia, at its wcrrst was comfort itself compared with ihe opening < lay of the French exhibition last week. For this, i[ wai stated, the promoters of the show har,l issued one l.rundred tho, usand invitations, and the consequence \\'as the people of I'aris flocked to the show in dense crowds, thousands being unable to obtair-r atlmissio,n at all. The vast majority o,f them rurquestiorralrly ditl rrot go to..see automobiles; they simply rvent to gapre at tLe brilliant an<l tasteftrl illuminations arrrl lt o"ne another. Owing to, the splenrlid scheme of illuminatio,n which has beco,me such a feature of the Paris Salon in recent years, it is regarrlerl as one of the spectacles rf the wrnter season, so that all Paris flocks to see it. Whether this so,rt of thing is really any use to the exhibitors or not is a very open question, but it is cert;rinly a nuisance to all rvho,go to the show to, look at the exhitrits; scr much so that no one tvitl.r any serious intention of sturll, ing the exhibits goes neai the place after noor.r on tlre opening clav unless he is compelled to do so. This may lte the best rvay to advertise an exhibition in l)lris, lrtrt u,e rlo not think a similar policy will be adopted fcrr British shows. O[ course, we kirow that a lc,t of free tickets have been distributed from time to time -for one English motor shorv, rvhich has resrrlterl in more or less overcrowtling. witl.r unc.lesir- able- visitors ; but this sort o[ thing his no,t been done at Oli nrpia, anrl tlie attentlan<'es rvhit:h are securerl at this exhibition (of rvhich rve published the totals on De<'t'nrber rst) shotv that there is nn neerl for this objectionable practice. We have referrerl to the matter at s()n'le length, because ue think the convenience and the comfort of the shorv visitors should be consitlererl still more in the future than they have been in the past. for, after all, the exhibition at Olrmpia is helrl foi one purpose, ar-rrl that is to enable the mtnufactrrrer tcr display his r:ars or other exhibits to people who are interested in and likelv to buv them. ..THE AUTOCAR'' SUBSCRIPTION RATES: Bririsl Isles, I6s. This rvas true if the rvortl rvas usecl in the sense of meaning that there were too many peop,le in the place at one time to be p,leasant. It was not merely a question of experiencing difficultv in making one's way through the crush from starld to stand, bui it was p,ractically out of the questicrn to examine the exhibits at all on many stands unless one was content tcr wait Il the potential purr:haser finrls thet he is harassed by crcnvds cif p,eo,ple who take no real interest in the exhibits, o,r if he is nearly suffcrcated by lack of venti- Iation, he rvill simply make up, his min<i that the show is no place for him, anrl from the exhibitor,s point of view the show will be, practically rvorthless, oi nearly so'. We bring this matter into p,rominence, because u'e think the last thing rvhir:h should trotrble the Society of l\{otor N{anrrfacturers is the making of large show profits ; it is much more importani that lt should hold shorvs which are succe.ssful from the exhibitors' point of vierv, shorvs rvhich attract the people rvho mean to buy cars. If the popularity of the show continues to grolv at the present rate it will be necessary to charse a higher iee for snf12n6s-.15 this would have the effect crf keeping away crowcls of idle sightseers, who simply wander -round the place aimlessly rvithout taking anv interest in the exhilrits at all.
