Last week we gave th e outline of the proposed interclub competition at Whitsuntide on Brooklands. We hope this competition will be well supported by the cl ubs throughout the country. As the meeting will be held at a holiday period, it will form a pleasant objective for clubs in the Midlands and North. If the meeting had been fix ed for an ordinary week-end it might have been difficult, if not impossibl e, for many of the rlubs in districts much over a hundred miles from Brooklands to participate. As it is, many motorists who live from 100 to 150 miles from Brooklands think nothing of running up to see a meeting, stopping the night at Cobham, Windsor, or Maiden - head, and running home easily on the day after the race-in fact, we know several who during the long days drive over a hundred miles to a ra ce meeting and home aga in the same day. So much for the date, 1rhich is undoubtedly a convenient one . It will be not d by reference to page 360 of The Autocar last 11·ee k that only touring ca rs in touring trim will beadmissible, an<l if this rule be rigidly enforced in the pirit as 1re ll as the letter, as we understand it will be, it will stop any dissatisfaction and save a lot of trouble in many ways, as apart from :he objection which most men driving genuine touring cars have to competing against semi-racing cars masquerading as touring vehicles, it makes a labour of sport if the competitors ha,·e to strip their cars before racing. Then, again, there will be three classes, so that small, medium, and high powered cars will all h'3.ve a cha nce of meeting their peers, and we hall not find the 6 h .p. and the 40 h.p. in the same handicap . The classification is set out loos ely for th e moment, but it is under t oo<l that proper precautions will be taken to avoid the difficulties inseparable from a rating based on bore alone. The classification may be on bore, but if this be the case, a minimum stroke for each class 11·ill be imposed, or else the handicap will be based on the two dimensions of bore and stroke. For inst ance, suppose two cars were entered in the 25.6, h .p. class-that is, the 4in. bore class-and one had a 4,½,in. stroke and the other a 5in. stroke, other things being eq ua l , the car with the longer stroke engine 11·ou ld be put on the shorter mark. As to the handicapping, this is to be in accordance ll'ith Brooklancls practice, which means in plain English that the ca rs will be handicapped by estimate based on the immense number of timed performances which th e B.A .R .C. has classified. This i the only unsatisfactory item of the proposal, as it cannot be said that th e Brooklands handicapping ha been a success up to now. No doubt it will get better as experience is gained, but in the meantime it woul d be far wiser to have a scratch race fo r each class, and toba e the handicaps on the performances made in th e scratch race . This is far better than gue swork or formulre, and ll'e hope it will be adopted. Possibly the event may be run in conjunction with a hill-climb up the ne 11· Brooklands hil l. This would certainly add to the interest of the meeting, and might well be made a double scoring event, so that each class would be won not by speed on the flat alone. but by th e best combined e ffort on the . print and up the hill. Altogether the proposed meeting has great possibilities, and we hope that Wpit-Monday will see a great rally of ti cl ubs on inJer-competition bent at Brooklands. Swivelling Headlights. There is no doubt that there 11·ould be a smaller demand for exceedingly powerful headlight if it were not for the Loca l Government Board regulation, which runs as fo l lows: "Every lamp carried by the motor car when in use on a high, rny at any time during the period
