Then this: ‘Sir’s a malteser!’ I faced the kids’ silence. Time slowed its works. Showed its cogs. ‘Who said that?’ Three learners of colour and 23 others worked the silence. I walked out. The corridor was newly painted in… papaya yellow? I marched into my Leader of Learning’s room, his class reading I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. From the back, a boy bellowed: ‘Ain’t I A Woman? ‘That’s a book you need to read, Sir.’ My heart bloomed: what Ju-ju was my new boss conjuring? Marvin Thompson
