Editor’s letter DEAR READERS, With less than 14% of the UK population aged over 70, it’s safe to say that the vast majority of us have not witnessed the Coronation of a new British monarch. Those who were fortunate to have access to a television when Queen Elizabeth was crowned in 1953 were restricted to viewing it all in black and white. How things have changed. In a month’s time we shall enjoy the splendour of the Coronation and all the accompanying pomp and ceremony – a showcase to the world of something Britain as a nation does so well. There is very much a theme of Best of British running throughout this issue. Thomas Blaikie reflects on the life of King Charles to date, while Kerry Parnell gives us 25 priceless facts about his Coronation so you can impress your friends with your knowledge on the day. Ciar Byrne takes us to the gardens of Highgrove, which our King is so passionate about. You will have a glance at the celebrations for the Queen’s Coronation 70 years ago with personal memories from Liz Hodgkinson and, much further back in time, Rebecca Wallersteiner takes us to the Norfolk coast where the wreck of the Gloucester has been found, the sinking of which in 1682 could have altered the royal lineage. As the preparations for the next Paralympics gather pace, Clare Balding interviews Dame Sarah Storey, our most decorated Paralympian. Glimpsing into our archive, we remember the tragedy of the ocean liner Titanic, which sank this month in 1912. Fancy some food? We give you the recipes for three quintessentially British dishes and Emma Young reveals how she nearly became a royal cook. Meanwhile Dr Sue Hyde celebrates the power of music and Gillian Spickernell looks at the importance of vitamins in our lives. There’s so much more in this issue but I won’t spoil the surprise… Until May, God save the King!
