A fascinating issue This issue has more than its fair share of articles which inform, entertain, captivate and fascinate. For example, the aerial photographs of Fountainbridge and Tollcross, taken in 1930 and 1993, show just how much has changed over 63 years, and continues to change to this day. Those who know the area will find themselves captivated by these photographs, and I’m delighted to report that we have plans to similarly highlight other areas of Edinburgh in future issues. Shipping Roots is the thought-provoking summer exhibition at the Botanics which illustrates how the introduction of non-indigenous plants to other continents for commercial gain, has had serious non-intended consequences which we are still grappling with to this day. And we also highlight Traprain Law in East Lothian, which was home to a Roman hillfort and offers unique clues to life in fourth century Roman Britain, north of Hadrian’s Wall. All this plus: the history of the Royal Society of Edinburgh as it celebrates its 240th; artist Peter Howson’s powerful retrospective exhibition which occupies four floors of the City Art Centre, HRH The Princess Royal’s visit to The Merchant Company of Edinburgh and the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath which is on public display - for the first time in 18 years - at the National Museum of Scotland in Chambers Street – don’t miss it! Finally, by the time the next issue of Edinburgh Life is published, over 90% of the population will have witnessed, for the first time, the coronation of a British monarch. Testament indeed to the longevity of our late Queen, and to the quiet patience of King Charles III. In this issue, former Lord Provost Eric Milligan recalls with great fondness his meetings with Queen Elizabeth as well as occasions where our new King showed great warmth and humanity as he met various groups of people around the city. Eric wishes King Charles well, as does Edinburgh Life. I do hope you enjoy this issue.
