When you connect with people face-to-face you find inspiration, so it is great that the design calendar is back on track In June we will launch our first podcast, titled COVER Conversations (details to be announced). In the inaugural episode I talk to Simon Goff of London rug brand Floor Story and business sustainability consultant Sally Burtt-Jones of 11 TwentyTwo Ltd about Floor Story’s recently released Impact Report. One of the main reasons I decided to record this conversation is because so many companies want to begin adopting better sustainable practices but are not clear on how to start the process. Goff has undertaken a full Impact Report, something that bigger companies are becoming increasingly obliged to do because of new legislation, but an idea that smaller companies may also find helpful. His approach is not only one of openness but also of finding shared solutions in which the rug community can work together. Listen to the podcast to find out more. This idea of people from different companies and different walks of life working together towards a common goal was also a prevalent theme at the recent Xtant textile event in Palma de Mallorca. On the Spanish island, a big group of textile creatives and enthusiasts gathered to appreciate heritage craft artworks and think together as a collective about how textile production can be achieved in a more ethical way. My review of the show gives some insight into the work that different people are doing across the globe in small communities. The idea I discussed in last issue’s editorial was the recent switch from globalism to—in the words of Mohamed Maktabi of Iwan Maktabi—‘the specificity of culture’. Within this concept heritage crafts are given more of a chance to survive. Another event that inspired much in the issue was Milan Design Week. This fair also celebrates international design talent with some amazing designs coming from ClassicCon’s Eileen Gray exhibition, cc-tapis’ numerous collaborations, and young design company Arisaa, as well as new work by Art & Loom, By Kamy, Mohebban, Tai Ping and Jaipur Rugs. The issue is full of the new work that was on show at recent events. When you connect with people face-to-face you find inspiration, so it is great that the yearly design calendar is back on track in 2023. We look forward to seeing people at the third edition of COVER Connect New York on 9–11 September, which is previewed in this issue. Lucy Upward, Editor
