LETTER FROM THE PBS In my last letter I promised more in-person events, and by the time you read this we will have held the Newcastle Poetry Festival. Now in its eighth year, this is a major event in the calendar for fans of international contemporary poetry. The Poetry Book Society is a key partner alongside the poetry publisher Bloodaxe and NCLA at Newcastle University. A ll of the events were filmed so if you couldn’t be there in person you can find them on the NCLA youtube channel, including readings from our Summer Choice, Airea D. Matthews, and recommended poet Adam Lowe. We are committed to promoting live poetry events and are passionate about attracting poetry readers to discover the beautiful towns and cities, countryside and coastline of the north east. We understand our readers are spread across the country so are, of course, looking to be involved in more national events over the second half of the year and beyond. I feel this season’s Bulletin is a lesson in empathy – we readers are treated to an insight into the lived experiences of marginalised people and their communities. Our summer choice is a memoir-in-verse, Bread and Circus by Airea D. Matthews who writes, “the book amalgamates spectral imaging, photography, and poetry to explore the social and economic realities of race and class in America” and was born from a study trip to research Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations. I won’t talk about all the books – the Bulletin is here for you to browse! I just hope you enjoy these recommendations, selections and reviewed titles as much as we have. I hope they find a good home with you, our Poetry Book Society members, and that you’ll help to spread the word about a ll of these brilliant books. SOPHIE O’NEILL PBS & INPRESS DIRECTOR 3
