EDITORIAL In this job, classical music tends to follow me wherever I go. Popping into my local hospital earlier this year for a routine blood test, my waiting-room companions and I were treated to the sound of an aria floating through the corridors. After my appointment, I wandered down the hall to find mezzo Katie Macdonald and pianist David Palmer delighting an audience of patients and visitors. This brief – but hugely positive – experience got me thinking about the musicians and organisations who bring the joy of live music into healthcare settings. In this issue’s cover feature Clarissa Payne finds out exactly how organisations are able to do just that (p22). Talking to ENO, Live Music Now and Breathe Arts Health Research (the team behind the performance I came across after being patched up), we discover how the collaborations come about, and hear how they have impacted participants.
