Looking forward Such is the lead time for the production of the magazine that this issue must be completed before the long break for Christmas and the New Year, traditionally a time for both reflection and looking forward. New product announcements Looking forward, it is that time of year again when many manufacturers reveal their programmes for the coming year. Formerly most of these would have been made in connection with the Spielwarenmesse, the major toy and hobby trade fair in Nürnberg, which will be taking place at the end of January/start of February but again with limited participation by model railway companies. We have decided a visit would not be worth while and we will relay information submitted by the manufacturers. Freed from conforming to the event dates, announcements may now be spread over a longer period – indeed some may already be available. We plan to collate the information and present it in our April and May dated editions, as usual. CM Cup competition 2023 reminder As to reflection, there is still just time to submit your choice for the CM Cup competition. We would like to know which six articles you found most inspiring from all the 2023dated editions. All features are eligible. Full details and an entry form can be found on page 88 of the January issue or you can simply let us know by e-mail. Vale Nigel Mann As this issue was being completed we were shocked and saddened to hear that Nigel Mann had died following a heart attack at the age of only 62. He will have been known to many in the hobby through his work booking layouts for the Fareham and Bristol exhibitions and his enthusiastic involvement with the clockwork Tendring Hundreds which was regularly set up for running sessions at Stubbington Community Centre. His other interests included the OO Trenance (BR(W)/SR) and (under construction) Glasgow Queen Street in N, and he was a competent operator on several other exhibition layouts, most recently assisting on Beijiao at the Warley NEC show and The Andeer Line at Manchester. Not only a man of many modelling interests, he was also a signalman and guard on the West Somerset Railway – as a change from his ‘day job’ as a controller on Network Rail in the south-east! Our sincere sympathies and condolences to his family and many friends. We should also record that Jan van Mourik, one the modellers responsible for the Keretapi Minyat Sawit palm oil layout (CM December 2023), died in December after a long illness. We understand that he did get to see the article, and approved. We were also sad to learn that our friend Andrew Mullins, founder of Branchlines, died in December, aged 75. He started the business in the late 1980s, based on an interest in railways dating back to his school days, first part time and then, with its success, full time. When he became ill with lymphoma in 2007, he sold Branchlines and retired. His ingenuity and design skills both for complete kits and small accessories, in various scales, not to mention the speed with which he could turn an idea into a product, were remarkable. 3a
