Welcome
Welcome to the March/ April issue of TRACTION.
Before I talk about the contents of this issue there is some exciting news about the future of TRACTION. From the next issue TRACTION will merge with BRM (BRITISH RAILWAY MODELLING). The number of pages devoted to the prototype railway will be similar but instead of TRACTION being bi-monthly TRACTION IN BRM will appear in every issue… that’s EVERY FOUR WEEKS. Many of TRACTION’s existing readers have requested that the magazine should appear more frequently so we are pleased to be able to fulfil this request! There are more details on the inside of the back cover on page 51.
Now let’s look at the contents of this issue. We start with a fascinating account of two photographic expeditions made by John Dedman to the Coalville line when, in 1986, the line was still busy with coal traffic.
Bridgwater, in Somerset, was, by comparison, a minor freight centre, as Richard Giles recalls in his feature about the last days of the ‘Bridgwater Tripper’.
Roy Kethro concludes his interesting series of articles about his time spent working at Bristol Bath Road depot.
The days of BR’s extensive operation of special passenger trains over Bank Holiday weekends are recalled in David Wharton’s photo feature showing specials to the Lancashire coast in the Preston and Wigan areas.
Gavin Bland, like many the enthusiasts, discovered that
Tamworth was an excellent location to watch and photograph freight traffic as its location where the Birmingham to Derby line crosses the West Coast Main Line makes it a good vantage point. It’s one of those rare ‘double deck’ stations where you need plenty of stamina to see everything by moving between the ‘top deck’ and ‘low deck’.
Finally, Gavin Morrison has looked into his photo archive for images of the ‘Other Blue Pullman’ that utilised repainted Mark 2 coaches and Class 47s.
In TRACTION MODELLING our featured layout is Aldergrove in N Gauge.
Now please turn to the inside back cover to read more about the future of TRACTION.
