Editor’s letter DEAR READERS, February. The shortest month of the year and the oddest, since every four years it is extended from precisely four weeks to 29 days. Since The Lady was fi rst published in 1885 (we will be 139 later this month and, I think, look good on it), there have been 34 leap years, including this one. There are superstitions all over the world about 29 February being either lucky or unlucky, but it was definitely the former for Princess Alexandra. In our Lady Remembers feature we recall the birth of her son James on that day 60 years ago. On a related theme, Thomas Blaikie continues his series about our royal family, and gives us an insight into the life of the Princess of Wales. As we go to press she is recovering from major surgery, and we wish both her and the King, who has had his own health scare, swift and full recoveries. Of course, February is also the month when we celebrate Valentine’s Day. With romance in mind, Kate Glanville, who wrote the charming Christmas tale for our December issue, returns with the fi rst episode of a two-part story that concludes next month. Our style editor Armand Beasley explores seductive new fragrances, Amy Barnard tells us about hand-made love tokens from the past, and we ask an expert how to ensure your heart – and your loved one’s – keeps ticking healthily into later life. We take a special look at antiques and collectibles, and Kerry Parnell whets our appetites for holidays in Europe. Our gardening columnist Ciar Byrne meets Lord and Lady Barnard as they reveal their plans for the development of their estate at Raby Castle in County Durham, Richard Barber meets Call the Midwife star Helen George, and Liz Hodgkinson asks why men appear to age faster than women. All this and so much more awaits inside. I shall leave you to enjoy it. Editor’s letter

DEAR READERS,

February.

Until next month,
