Howdy Shindiggers, We are now roughy 60 years on from The Beatles and Stones changing the world. The subsequent 50ths, 40ths, 30ths, even 20ths, all now bare varying degrees of nostalgia, and vintage charm. There’s a lot of music behind us. Upcoming returns from The Prisoners and The Soundtrack Of Our Lives are eagerly awaited by all at Shindig! Yet artists like The Lemon Twigs and Daniel Romano’s Outfit continue to record incredible music, as good as anything from the annals of rock history. Sure, like nearly all of the current artists that tick our boxes, the “past” is referenced, but the finest acts bring something of their own to the proceedings, keeping rock ’n’ roll alive and fresh. This magazine celebrates the “then” and the “now” equally, and the collector and fan has never had it better. There’s a wealth of recordings to look back on and enjoy, and contemporary artists continue to offer their take on the many forms of music that thrill us, melding them together, often creating something highly original. As Modstock approaches (see our interview about the event on page10) we decided that going all art-pop was very timely. Terry Nolder remembers a couple of magic years fronting The Eyes in the ’60s, during the time when Ealing was alight with creativity and a forwardthinking attitude. Elsewhere we voyage to Korea for an appreciation of ’70s band Sanullim, talk with rock ’n’ roll photographer David Arnoff, hear about Spirit’s Twelve Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus in the band’s own words, and chronicle French legend Michel Polnareff ’s glory days – and that’s just scratching the surface. It fills us with joy to read messages about how much you lot loved our output in 2023. Here’s to the fact-filled, open, and daring year that lays ahead. Do subscribe if you are yet to do so.
