Good news is no news Following so soon after reports that the Warley National Model Railway Exhibition at the NEC last November had enjoyed good attendance and was financially successful, we were surprised and disappointed when the club announced that it had been decided not to stage the show again at the NEC, citing the risk of inevitably rising costs and potentially falling revenue, and noting that it was increasingly difficult to find volunteers to take on the crucial roles. However, even more surprising was the subsequent reporting of the show’s demise as well as the closure of the long established retailer Hattons in some of the national press – not normally noted for their interest in our hobby unless linked to some celebrity. They somehow picked up on the two quite separate and coincidental announcements, drew an unwarranted conclusion, and declared that the hobby was in terminal decline. There is much more to both these situations than mentioned in the official press releases. We would much rather focus on positive signs – for example, the major show in Scotland at the SEC (about to happen as this issue is published); the impressive line-up at Abingdon at the start of March, where the club is making a special effort to celebrate their fiftieth anniversary; and, at the end of month, over the Easter long weekend, the traditional show at York, in the familiar setting of the Racecourse, with an excellent selection of layouts. Looking further ahead to July, we were delighted to learn that the Chatham show (a significant regional event) will be returning to the Historic Dockyard after too long an absence. Anyone who thinks that the hobby is in decline should attend one of these events. (We plan to be at all of them, unashamedly ‘playing trains’ at two of them!) These, like most of the shows listed every month in our Exhibition Diary, are organised by clubs for the benefit of the hobby in general and (of course) to raise funds to support club premises and activities. We observe that certain commercial concerns are increasingly interested in staging shows – does that suggest a declining market? While any event that promotes and celebrates our hobby is welcome, we must remember that shows depend on volunteer free labour – for organising, setting up, staffing on the day, and clearing up, not to mention the time, effort, and resources that go into creating and transporting the layouts which are the main attraction. Exhibitions would not be economically viable if all this had to be paid for; we encourage exhibitors to bear this in mind when considering invitations. Sponsorship and support can be welcome; trading behind the front (however willing) of a club or association not so. Cui bono? Vale Michael Bunn We were sad to hear from Roger Allen, Chairman of the French Railways Society, that Michael Bunn passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in early January. He was the Secretary and Treasurer of the Society for many years and for the last fifteen also the co-organiser of the Society’s annual Rendezvous and exhibition. He will be known to many for his talks up and down the country, mainly on French subjects, delivered in an enthusiastic, engaging, and informative manner, interlaced with his lovely sense of humour when appropriate. Amongst other railway activities, he was very involved in the twinning arrangement between the Kent and East Sussex Railway and the Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme. He will be much missed by all who knew him. 3a
