Aside from the sound of the guitars recorded through old mics and mixing desks, it’s the vocabulary and means of expression that intrigues and excites most. It’s a time before the UK’s players came to dominate blues with their raucous licks and overdriven tones in the 60s. Go back a decade to hear early BB King, Buddy Guy, and Alberts - Collins and King. The music was blues, rhythm and blues, often jazz infused, with rock and roll just a stone’s throw away. It was fertile ground, full of rhythmic playing for both riffing and soloing contexts. Go back a little further to the 40s, into the 50s and you’ll discover a style that’s somewhat out of today’s mainstream but will still draw people in to hear and play it, given half a chance. Jump blues is the name and it’s an uptempo blues music with a dash of jazz due to it coming out of the 30s big band era, and usually played by combo bands with horns. Jump blues, certainly for our purposes, is guitar driven. The six-stringers that have come to represent the style include T-Bone Walker (probably the atom of all blues guitar-based greatness), Billy Butler, Tiny Grimes, Bill Jennings and Jimmy Liggins. READY TO SUBSCRIBE? www.magazines direct.com If you’re having a hard time recalling some of these players you’re not alone, as they’re largely forgotten now. However, they were important guitarists who shaped the subsequent blues developments in the 50s and 60s. Jump blues does still exist today, the most famous being presented by Brian Setzer, whose playing is steeped in older styles but with various modern twists. When you turn to page 14 you’re going to deep dive into this world of rhythmic jazzy blues where ‘the good stuff’ exists in spades. The colour notes of 6ths and 9ths, intriguing chromatically infused entrances and exits to chord tones, sassy quartertone bends and ambiguous phrasing that skirts around the 3rd of a chord. It’s a treasure chest of great lead lines that will please your hands and ears, as well as entice people to listen to you play. Andy Saphir is your expert guide while Chris Corcoran is interviewed about the style; he’s one of the best UK players that revels in this music to appreciative audiences everywhere.
