I’ve heard many of his stories before, but the format of the show, in which he is prompted by his partner, Marj, was nicely dif ferent and teased out some new gems. As many of you will know, they have bought an old chapel in Wales and will be converting it into a studio space. The process will be documented by Channel 4, and as someone who has been renovating an old property for several years (more than a decade!), I’ll be watching with interest. And yes, it will undoubtedly take longer than expected and cost more than planned! What I hadn’t realised is that once it ’s up and running, he is planning to offer apprenticeships. Potters are very good at giving back, (mostly!) always happy to explain their processes, support newcomers and generally extol the virtues of working with clay, so with hindsight, I shouldn’t be surprised. Keith is unfailingly generous with people, greets you like an old friend and gives you 100% of his attention when you’re with him, so I’m sure that whoever he takes under his wing on the scheme will receive a fantastic education in studio production. Another example of potters being generous is an idea from the team at Ceramic Wales. There’s a great sense of community among potters when they attend shows, and CW has ‘The Sausage Club’. When the public have left, they gather together in the evening to eat, drink and be merry. There’s the seed of an idea developing around this, which would see a small annual membership fee being used to create a fund that would help potters in need. An example of the type of support it might provide was given to me in a story about a potter from abroad who had stopped en route to a show to have a nap. Having driven through the night to get here, he woke up to f ind his van had been clamped, but he couldn’t pay the f ine. The potters at the show not only drove out to help him but clubbed together to pay for the clamp to be removed. Community spirit thrived during Lockdown but seemed to disappear almost as quickly as it arrived – but not among potters! Please don’t ever change.
