NEWS Music Mark campaigns to raise awareness of the climate crisis IGN / APPLEDES STOCK ADOBE As the climate crisis continues to escalate at an alarming rate, Music Mark has announced a new campaign to help protect the Earth for future generations. Launched on Earth Day, 22 April, ‘This Is Not A Rehearsal’ encourages individuals and organisations within the sector to play their part, through accessing training, events and resources designed to reduce our carbon footprint and promote environmental sustainability. The campaign comes after 2023 was declared the warmest year since records began, and one of 10 consecutive years with dangerously high temperatures, according to the United Nations. As part of the campaign, Music Mark commissioned research into ‘where things stand’ in relation to music education and sustainability. It’s hoped that this research ‘will identify working practices and educational approaches that not only enhance environmental sustainability but also contribute to improved financial sustainability and perhaps even highlight innovative forms of creative practice.’ The campaign’s Steering Group includes Dan Somogyi (SoundStorm), Sharon Jagdev Powell (Leicestershire Music), Hannah Mears-Young (National Youth Folk Ensemble), Helen Mead (Portsmouth Music Hub), David Francis (Music Partnership North), Ruth Roberts (Kent Music), Pili Araujo Lopez (Dorset Music Hub), and Helen Cordina (Orchestras for All). Music Mark is encouraging individuals and organisations to get involved by signing up to ‘This Is Not A Rehearsal’ and implementing sustainable practices. The organisation says is ‘at the beginning of its own sustainable journey’ and hopes ‘to inspire others to join them’. musicmark.org.uk/this-is-not-a-rehearsal Music for All announces Learn to Play weekend Registration is now open for the next instalment of Music for All’s nationwide music-making event, set for 11–13 October 2024. Hailed as ‘the biggest free music-making weekend of the year’, Learn to Play ‘24 welcomes people of all ages and abilities to experience free taster sessions and the joys and benefits of music-making. Open to all, Learn to Play provides opportunities for participants to experience free music lessons across the UK. The lessons can be in singing or on an instrument. This year, Music for All welcomes as wide a range of providers to the event as possible, from schools and teachers to community groups and music retailers. The charity recognises that Learn to Play comes at a time when music education is severely impacted by cuts to public funding. In a statement, it said: ‘the government has imposed a 50% funding cut to art subjects, which will impact the future of the UK arts, the creative potential of the next generation and the people who deliver quality arts education in the UK’. Sonali Banerjee, general manager of Music for All, continued: ‘The Learn to Play weekend is needed now more than ever, and through our regional music-making events, we aim to connect and support vital UK music providers, as well as inspire and support as many people as possible. The arts enrich our lives, our community and economy, as well as improving our mental health. At Music for All we make it our mission to support disadvantaged music-makers with limited financial resources to access music-making.’ To find out more and submit a registration form, visit the Learn to Play providers web page. Those registered will receive a Promo Pack and access to a resource page providing guidance and support with running Learn to Play events. musicforall.org.uk/learn-to-playproviders M U S I C F O R A L L / L E A R N T O P L A Y 6 June 2024 MUSIC TEACHER www.musicteachermagazine.co.uk www.musicteachermagazine.co.uk
