Clerkenwell Design Week Preview Feature Conversations at Clerkenwell THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL SEES A plethora of design secrets revealed at the festival’s dedicated talks programme, Conversations at Clerkenwell. Curated by brand consultant Katie Richardson, the threeday schedule ­opens on Tuesday 21 May with an in-conversation featuring Mary Portas OBE. The talks, sponsored by RAK Ceramics, will take place in Spa Fields. ABOVE Mary Portas OBE + Henry Holland Tuesday 21 May Wednesday 22 May Thursday 23 May 11.00-12.00 Mary Portas OBE in Conversation with Becky Sunshine Influential and iconic businesswoman, broadcaster, author and activist Mary Portas OBE will talk through her life and work with journalist Becky Sunshine. The session will explore Mary’s passion and achievements across retail, fashion and the wider UK business landscape. 13.00-14.00 POoR Collective - Why Co-Design? How do you involve local communities in projects? How do you co-design with people that aren't designers? Shawn Adams from socially minded design studio POoR Collective shares his thoughts on co-design and working collaboratively with educational institutions, young people and different community groups. 14:00-15:00 Design Council Presents – Re-Industry: Designing a World of Mass Circularity With less and less of our waste going back into production and more new materials being mined, we are moving in the wrong direction. How can design help us ‘re-industry’, using tools such as big data and AI to shape consumer behaviour and create circular business models that drive the green transition? 12.00-13.00 Raw Edges in Conversation with Jessica-Christin Hametner Colours, pattern-making and movement form a large part of the DNA of Raw Edges’ work, and the studio’s witty and inventive approach has led to collaborations with global brands including Vitra, Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney and Airbnb. In this session, founders Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay speak with our editor, Jessica-Christin Hametner, on their work to date, sharing stories on colour, collaboration and global projects. 15.00-17.00 Green Grads Presents Designers Den Green Grads are recent graduates of UK universities with ideas to heal the planet. Explore the concept with founder and curator Barbara Chandler, leading into a live ‘designers den’ where five professionally established Green Grads pitch their projects to a panel of leading industry experts who will select a winner. 13:00-14:00 Mix Presents - Harry Handelsman in Conversation with Harry McKinley As the founder and CEO of Manhattan Loft Corporation, Harry Handelsman has overseen the development of some of London’s most influential hospitality destinations – from Chiltern Firehouse to The Stratford Hotel. A believer in doing things differently, here he discusses taking risks, disruptive thinking and using design to create memorable experiences. 16.00-17.00 Henry Holland in Conversation with Jessica-Christin Hametner Acclaimed designer Henry Holland has been designing for the worlds of fashion and interiors for the past 17 years, with House of Holland and more recently, Henry Holland Studio. In an conversation with our editor, Jessica-Christin Hametner, Henry looks back over his career to date, reflecting on how fashion has transitioned into homeware, the importance of making and the success of his move into ceramics – including a new collection for Bert and May. 26 iconeye.com

Feature Clerkenwell Design Week Preview Showroom activity 1 Neurodiversity has emerged as a leading topic gaining momentum among architects and designers, and AllSfär will address this important subject with a talk at its Baltic Street East showroom on 22 May at 15:30. Led by the founders of the neurodiversity consultancy ZoneND, this session focuses on designing for the senses and why it is the key to positive wellbeing and neuro-inclusive practice. 2 While bringing its popular Routemaster bus back to Brewhouse Yard during the festival, Havwoods will present a series of ‘Design Meets’ talks at Design Fields. These talks range from Studio Found and A-nrd Studio discussing the transportive power of hospitality design on 22 May (14:00), to designing homes for health and happiness led by TV presenter and former editor of Elle Decoration UK, Michelle Ogundehin, on 23 May (14:00). 3 The Old Street gallery of Iris Ceramica Group will be transformed into a ‘Bottega in Bloom’, rediscovering traditional arts and revisiting some age-old artisanal skills and techniques. Visitors will be invited to take on the role of traditional artisans, playing with colours, delicate flowers and discarded ceramics to create artistic and circular installations that will be on display for the duration of the festival. 4 To coincide with the opening of its new flagship showroom on Hatton Garden, Cosentino will host a range of events and talks throughout the festival. These include a block printing class on 21 May (14:00) and a terrarium workshop on 22 May (14:00), as well as partner events with leading brands including GRAFF Designs, Vibia Lighting and Ferm Living. 5 Fringe partner Cult Vision on Goswell Road will collaborate with 2023 Shed of the Year winner Archie Proudfoot on a live installation in its shop window. The artist will employ gold leaf to create mirrored surfaces on the glass, playing with reflections of the viewer and the cityscape behind them. 6 Also as part of the Fringe programme, architecture practice Pilbrow and Partners will open its doors with a free life drawing class – guided by artist Brian Sayers – on 22 May at 18:00. This event features life models seated among architectural models and material samples, inviting participants to capture the interplay between architecture and the human scale.
