72 SUMMER Li Edelkoort x El EspartanoA rug collection seen at Milan Design Week has a garden theme, but its creators stress it is more than just a story about nature The work of Brazilian artist Sérgio Machado is celebrated in a collaboration between trend forecaster Li Edelkoort and Argentinian rug brand El Espartano, which was on show at Rossana Orlandi’s gallery during Milan Design Week. For the Garden rug collection, Edelkoort selected a series of Machado designs to be turned into ten hand-tufted rugs by the Argentinian company. The naïve designs are bold and colourful and expressed with cut and loop pile in three di erent pile heights. From the alien-like Tre e o f Life to the more literal Flower Bed, the rugs speak about nature and innocence. About the collection Edelkoort says: ‘We decided to create a childish garden, with the naïveté of wildly drawn blooms, cut-out leaves, collaged botanicals, and a bed of flowers to rest. Rugs of visual hope for the inner garden’. www.elespartano.com 01 Secret Life 02 Bloom Room 03 Inner Garden 04 Field of Energy All designs Sérgio Machado x Li Edelkoort x El Espartano 01 03 04 02

I S SUE 73 01 s x cc-tapis x Faye Toogood The third collaboration between British designer Faye Toogood and Milanese rug brand cc-tapis awakened the senses and brought a smile to visitor faces during Milan Design Week in April ood 02 It was an exhibition of paintings by Francis Bacon that initially inspired a series of artworks by British designer Faye Toogood, in which she explored her relationship with her body. These creations have now become a series of tactile rugs in wool, aloe and linen, made in collaboration with Milan-based brand cc-tapis. The humorous Rude collection was displayed at the cc-tapis showroom in Toogood’s one-woman show alongside the soft and squashy Cosmic furniture series she designed for Tacchini. With names like Tiddlybits, Blue tit and Tongue-in-cheek, the whimsical rugs suggest body parts depicted by colourful blobs in varying heights of pile. The playful atmophere was enhanced by the soft sofas and furniture pieces that allowed guests to sink in and relax in the curated space. Toogood’s original artworks were also on show. www.cc-tapis.com F e r r a r i P h o t o: A n d r e a 03 04 01 Tongue-in-cheek, Faye Toogood x cc-tapis 02 Bits and bobs, Faye Toogood x cc-tapis 03 Bits in space, Faye Toogood x cc-tapis 04 Faye Toogood artworks in the cc-tapis showroom
