Lahore-based multidisciplinary design studio A* alittlemore studio (the first part is pronounced ‘A star’) was one of many creative firms with exciting work showing as part of Isola—the multi-venue event during Milan Design Week. Visitors to the ‘Future is Currently Unavailable’ display—focusing on collaborative, circular and sustainable design—were able to view the studio’s new Smog rug collection, which expresses a visual story through a series of stunning ombre colour compositions.
While the studio was founded last year by Aleeya Khan, the three 100% hand-spun wool rug designs— The Calendar, The Runner and The Room—are the work of company creative head Masshal Saif and designer Mijshgan Kayani. The duo

wanted to depict vivid abstractions of the beautiful Punjabi landscape that is undergoing dramatic shifts due to climate change.
The Calendar abstractly expresses the farming cycles of the region’s three major crops— wheat, rice and cotton—over a year. Through graduated colour, it symbolises processes such as the planting of the crops and the smog of the crop-burning season.
The Runner depicts snapshots of the sky. The repeated sections are sometimes cool and blue and other times hot and fiery owing to crop burning. Lastly, in The Room, the colours of a smog-infused sky are expressed in strips that are woven together to make an intriguing square rug design. Company founder Khan says, ‘We believe that good design should do more than just look pretty—it should shift your perspective and invite play.’ www.alittlemorestudio.com 03
