Chatham back – and at the Dockyard We were delighted to learn that The Chatham Show is being held again on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st July in The Historic Dockyard after a gap of several years. It had become not only a significant event in the south-east but had earned a national reputation which attracted both exhibitors and visitors from some distance. Indeed, its fame even spread internationally – the show was often able to host layouts from across the Channel (one of the first clubs in this country to do so) – but also took advantage of its geographical position which made it possible for visitors to attend from the near continent, sometimes just for a day. We remember on one occasion unexpectedly encountering a Dutch modeller of our acquaintance who had come not with a layout but just as a visitor. We enquired whether he had used the Channel Tunnel or a ferry. “Neither” was the reply. “I came by boat – it is moored outside.” The benefit of the dockside location! And no need to find accommodation ... of course, few people have the means to do this or indeed the necessary skill and qualifications to navigate one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, though we did wonder how that compared with traffic on the M25! It is discouraging to note that the same modeller was recently turned back by French customs officials when he tried to bring a diorama to an exhibition in Britain, despite having what he believed was the appropriate documentation which had been accepted on a previous recent trip. To add insult to injury, he was actually fined for attempting to break the rules! If he had not followed proper procedure and declared the contents of his car, the officials would not have known. Perhaps he should have used his own boat again ... Both economic factors and practical considerations combined to make a revival of the Chatham show difficult until now – not least, of course, the Covid pandemic and its after-effects – but some younger members of the club have taken the initiative, with suitable guidance and advice from older hands with some experience of the event in former times. No doubt it has been a steep learning curve for them, but we hope they can create the same atmosphere. The list of over forty layouts certainly looks interesting, and amongst them there is a worthwhile contingent of foreign layouts. These include: Quévy (French/Belgian N winter scene) by Brian Chapman Somewhere In France (First World War OO9) by Peter Capon (CM November 2022) Obermatt (Swiss HOm) built by John Frost and refurbished by Glenn Allen Villefranche-La-Chapelle (French HO) by Graham Broad (CM September 2016) K Street Yard (US HO) by Eric Cain Out West (US On30) by Luke Roberts The layouts will be augmented with a large number of modelling demonstrations, special interest societies, and a wide range of traders. We will certainly be going to check it out, though we do not have a formal stand. There is more information in our News section (p.604) and the Exhibition Diary listing (p.16a). For further details, see: www.chatham-mrc.co.uk/exhibition The Historic Dockyard is well signposted from the A2 and M2. Parking is available at The Historic Dockyard and also at the adjacent Dockside Outlet Centre (charges apply). To celebrate the event’s revival, the Chatham & District Model Railway Club has commissioned a special limited edition ‘Royal Dockyard, Chatham’ four-wheel open wagon from Rapido Trains that will be sold exclusively at the show. 3a
