AUGUST 2024 Cover 030TU running light crosses the Rue de la Glacière on the way from the docks to the junction with the Paris belt line on the Docks – Ceinture fine scale 1:87 layout built and developed over a long period by a group of talented French modellers. Photo: Gerard Tombroek. Changes of plan We apologise to anyone who expected to see a feature on Friedrichstraße by the Liphook & District MRC in the July issue, as heralded in the Coming Next Month section in the June edition. Those few lines can be a hostage to fortune! They are compiled while the contents are still fluid to some extent, and this was one of the rare occasions where a change of plan was necessary after the magazine had gone to print. The article has been rescheduled and should be in our November-dated edition, to correspond with the layout’s appearance at the South Hants MRC exhibition in Portsmouth in November. While we do allocate articles to issues some time in advance – sometimes a long time – planned features may turn out to have more or fewer pages than anticipated. Further, items for review may arrive without notice and need to be included as soon as possible, perhaps requiring more pages than initially allocated. (It would be also be a problem if we reserved space and no samples arrived ... !) We must also remain flexible with the editorial content until the number of advertising pages has been determined. To allow the necessary leeway, there will be more articles in progress at one time than will appear in the next issue. In another change to the published programme (to coin a phrase), it was not possible for The Andeer Line to be at Pecorama in June as widely advertised on posters, flyers, and in the magazines. The change was necessary at short notice due to several factors, and was advised on the Pecorama website and social media. We hope no-one was inconvenienced. It was particularly disappointing as the layout had a successful outing to the Exeter show the previous weekend, and in previous years this has produced a worthwhile result as a local audience visit for another chance to operate. It is remarkable to observe how people (of all ages) become captivated by driving a (model) train with an app on a smart ‘phone! Barring unforeseen circumstances, dates for the remainder of the year should as noted in the News section on page 692. The DCC for beginners courses at Pecorama continue to prove popular, though there are still a few places available for future dates: Friday 9th August, Saturday 7th September, and Saturday 5th October. Others may be added according to demand. Participants seem very appreciative of the content and the approach. Some of our colleagues recently sat in on one of the courses, and reported that it was interesting and informative – even they learned something! The level of interest is not surprising as the use of DCC has spread considerably in the UK in recent years, if layouts observed at exhibitions and articles submitted are any guide – which will come as no surprise to modellers of European and American subjects, where the technology was adopted rather earlier. Future developments include the launch of the Gaugemaster Infinity range (see p.692) and the eventual arrival of the Bachmann Kinesis system. When these are available, they will be evaluated and reviewed in our magazines, and relevant information incorporated into the DCC courses, though these are generally not system-specific – while showing a range of representative products from various suppliers, they are designed to enable the user to determine their own requirements and select a system that suits their needs. Changes of plan

We apologise to anyone who expected to see a feature on Friedrichstraße by the Liphook & District MRC in the July issue, as heralded in the Coming Next Month section in the June edition.
