In part three of this series, James McCreet looks at how you can put your honed writing skills to use in creating readable, persuasive words that pay o you’re an advanced writer. You’ve learned the basics and started to master the kinds of tricks that professionals typically use to engage readers. Being an advanced writer means not only being able to write, but also knowing how to structure, to edit, to present ideas and to persuade.
Your first choice may be publication. After all, you have the skills not only to write a publishable novel but also to create a compelling cover letter, synopsis and even blurb to help sell your book. This is the dream. However, we all know that publication usually doesn’t bring immediate riches. Nor will a good book necessarily be published. Genuinely excellent writing tends to sell less well than workmanlike storytelling.
Advanced writers can use their skills in different ways. By all means, keep working on the novels – but you might be able to generate enough income to live by writing if you explore other opportunities. Let’s look at some of them.

Your ability to write articles is as important as your ability to spot opportunities and research areas that may be in demand. If you can produce pieces of various lengths in various styles for various media, you should contact editors with a list of potential ideas.
Remember, though, that editors want to work with professionals. As an advanced writer, you’re expected to send a finished piece that can be quickly proofed and dropped directly into the publication. This is not a case of working with editors to get feedback and go through multiple drafts. Your job – what marks you out as an advanced writer – is to deliver good copy on time every time. Do this and editors may soon start commissioning work from you.

You have the skills to improve a story, an article, a report, website copy or anything else. Your fundamental talent is in knowing what works and why. Many people are currently offering their services as editors. Few of them have demonstrated their skills by producing published or publishable work of their own. If you can demonstrate your superior knowledge of how to critique an article or a full novel, you could set up a free website and start touting for business. Most of your clients will be beginners who need a lot of help with the basics and your advantage is that you’ve already been there. You can empathise.
Coaching is a little different. This is more teaching that mere correction and usually requires working with a particular writer for weeks or months, coaxing and guiding them towards a higher level. You may know the difference between good
