The simple things
The Freelander 2 was pressed into service for
Martin’s latest jaunt
SOMETIMES it ’s the little adventures that can be the most memorable. It can definitely be said of a trip I took a couple of weekends ago to the Peak District with Land Rover Life editor Neil Watterson, LRM Associate Publisher Steve Miller and his wife, Louise, and esteemed contributor Alisdair Cusick and his son, Edward. The jaunt was actually Alisdair’s idea, and as the day of scenic drives, cups of tea, greenlaning and a ploughman’s lunch unfolded, it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable days of Land Rovering I ’ve had in quite a while.
stacked high with wood and other garden rubbish I pressed the Freelander 2 into service and actually, I enjoyed the day just as much as I would have in any other Land Rover.
A real highlight for me was being chucked the keys for Ali’s Series I – a real bucket-list drive that I ’ve been wanting to fulfil for quite a while, having never had the chance to get behind the wheel of one before. And wow, what an experience; the 1957 88in is one of the loveliest Series Land Rovers I ’ve ever driven, with light, precise controls and a forgiving ride as it bumbled along the dusty lane.
It ’s quite rare that a bunch of us from the mag(s) get together with no work-related agenda, so it was a real treat to spend the day pottering about, exploring leafy greenlanes and intermittently pulling into a parking area to spark up the Jetboil for a cuppa.
I don’t think I stopped smiling for the rest of the afternoon, and it made an already brilliant day even better. Sometimes you just have to jump in your Land Rover and see where the road takes you, no matter which model you drive or how far you go.
Steve and Louise were in their Defender 90 and Alisdair brought his beautiful patina-resto Series I along, so I felt like I maybe should have given the Series III a run out to fit in with the other square models, but as the loadspace was
It ’s the vehicles we love and the people who we share that passion with that make even a small adventure out feel like a big one.
