Issued as Miles In France 1963-1964 – The Bootleg Series, Vol.8, the 6CD set and 8LP set contains more than four hours of previously unreleased music and consists of all the music made at Antibes 26, 27, 28 July 1963 with George Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, and the show at Salle Pleyel in Paris on 1 October 1964 which featured Wayne Shorter, Hancock, Carter and Williams in their second ever concert. Miles had a special affinity for France and played there more times than any other country, and recorded there frequently, going back as far as 1949 when, at the age of 22, he first appeared at the Festival International 1949 De Jazz at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, and as late as 16 July 1991 in Nice, just two months before he died on 28 September 1991. This latest addition to the Miles Davis Bootleg Series fills in a significant period in Davis’s output with the series so far including music from as early as 1955, and as late as 1985, but, until now, nothing from 1963 or 64, two pivotal years in Miles’s discography that mark the auspicious beginnings of the Second Great Quintet. More details at www.appjag.org/parliamentary-jazz-awards Banger Factory show, Veronica Swift for Jazz Voice and others added to EFG London Jazz Festival The line-up for this year’s EFG London Jazz Festival, which runs from 15 to 24 November at venues large and small across the capital now includes more international names and newly announced additions to the wide ranging programme. These include the guest singers for the opening night Jazz Voice gala at the Royal Festival Hall (RFH) on Friday 15 November with Brazilian vocal star Marisa Monte; US singer Veronica Swift; Leeds rising star Lucy Anne Daniels; Sade/ Incognito affiliated Momrelle; Homeland and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood actor turned singer Damian Lewis; and singer, songwriter, producer IAMTHELIVING all appearing. There’s also a packed label showcase from the Banger Factory Records label boss Mark Kavuma who launches his new album Magnum Opus with an all-star band of David Mrakpor, Ruben Fox, Sahra Gure, Rachael Cohen and Artie Zaitz all at the QEH (17 Nov). A big band of some of London’s finest musicians directed by achievement by any magazine’s standards – we focus on the position of women in jazz today and how much it has changed since our launch issue back in April 1997. During these 27 years, Jazzwise has always strongly supported female jazz musicians and has featured more women on the cover than most other jazz magazines, but there is still much more to do. And while jazz has adapted and flexed its chameleon-like ability to move with and reflect the times, the world today is more febrile and divided than in decades. In this momentous year, dominated by elections in over 60 countries, the looming US election is almost certainly the most seismic in a generation… but there is hope, and her name is Kamala Harris. We also mark this 300th issue by saluting two historic and game-changing women’s political movements, both coincidentally led by 300 female activists, and which ultimately led to Harris being on the election ticket. In the USA in 1848 the first Women’s Rights Convention eventually led to the right for women to vote in 1920, and in London in 1910, 300 women marched to the Houses of Parliament as part of their campaign to secure voting rights for women, which after eight years and many bitter battles later they finally gained the right to vote in Britain in 1918. Today there’s much to celebrate with new generations seeing fewer barriers between men and women, and diversity is a byword for the richness of the young jazz scene. Here’s to the next 300! Mike Flynn and Jon Newey, Jazzwise singer Tony veteran US trumpeter Charles Tolliver join the line-up for the Max Roach tribute at the Barbican and includes Jean Toussaint, Denys Baptiste, Byron Wallen and Josh Short. Led by Tolliver, the evening will celebrate what would have been the legendary jazz drummer’s 100th birthday (18 Nov). There’s also a special show at Union Chapel in Islington with George Nelson presenting an all-star edition of his ‘Moment’s Notice’ series with Brit jazz sax don Courtney Pine, Ezra Collective drummer Femi Koleoso and top Swiss bassist Peter Eldh already confirmed for a memorable closing weekend improv summit on 24 November.
