Morning (or whatever time it is for you). As I get ready to move (Andy has just done so and is still unpacking his ’60s pop annuals), it feels like a real achievement to deliver such a splendid issue, even if I am writing this at 06:30 on a Sunday morning. That’s how we roll. We don’t have stand-ins with this job; the work gets done, whatever. And whilst I won’t state that what we do is challenging, it takes a certain degree of energy and a lot of dedication to deliver a magazine every month, come what may. Many would consider us insane (including ourselves), but we realise that we offer a service. The letters and comments say it all. We owe it to you.
Whilst dealing with estate agents and banks, trimming back record collections and so on, we’ve concocted an edition that is about as “21st century Shindig!” as is possible. Last month, we featured The Osmonds, and the response has been great. Now, it’s the turn of Paul Williams, yet another successful artist that may not be deemed “cool”. Yes, him; the instantly recognisable presence who wrote smash hits for The Carpenters and Kermit The Frog. Williams speaks frankly with Thomas Patterson, over the course of two issues, about old-fashioned songs, The Muppets, his film career, including one of our faves The Phantom Of The Paradise, and a very tough childhood and later addictions. It’s a fascinating account of a maverick entertainer. Let the letters commence. I talked to the legendary Steve Cropper, there’s a brilliant account of Richie Havens’ magnificent first phase, and we uncover the story of ’80s shoulda beens Boys Wonder, and the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it psych/prog act Pussy.
As winter approaches, we’d just like to remind you to stock up on back issues and conisder treating that music loving pal to a subscription for Xmas. Visit our site for more information and to keep an eye on our forthcoming activities. Stay cool, Jon ‘Mojo’ Mills, Editor-In-Chief
