In Focus: MARSM Hiba Tawaji performing at Cadogan Hall in 2024 for MARSM “You’re just as likely to see our name on a hip-hop showcase in an underground venue in Hackney, at a grand performance of classical oud music at His Majesty’s Theatre in the West End,” says MARSM’s Director, Khaled Ziada. The London-based platform, which is celebrating a decade of existence in 2025, delights in its expansive approach to programming, producing and promoting music from the Arabic-speaking world and its diaspora. Concerts, club nights, workshops and festivals have featured an extraordinary roll call of artists, such as Nai Barghouti, Faraj Suleiman, Souad Massi, Le Trio Joubran, Carole Samaha and 47Soul, while MARSM’s extracurricular activities have extended to the creation of an impressively comprehensive online hub, initially formed in corollary to the rigours of lockdown as a burgeoning resource for devotees of Arabic music. Without networks, you’re constantly reinventing the wheel and working alone “Our digital platform includes podcasts, articles, mixtapes and an enormous selection of playlists covering everything from Habibi Funk to Arabic cartoon music,” explains Ziada. “It’s a great place for newcomers to gain a glimpse into an extraordinarily diverse musical world, and for die-hard fans to learn more about the artists and genres they love.” Such initiatives complement MARSM’s mission to foster a sense of community, of G r e g D e o d e alliances and structures of network-building, within the Arabic-speaking world. “Without networks, you’re constantly reinventing the wheel and working alone,” says Georgie Pope, Head of Creative Partnerships at MARSM. “There’s no need; collaboration is key. If you have a phonebook full of artists who you know and love, a network of venues who trust you, a strong core fanbase that will spread the word about your events and live music promotors who are happy to share their joys, sorrows and advice – then, you’ve cracked the music industry.” Under MARSM’s dutiful patronage, that sense of community – one where audience, artist , venue and staff teams combine to energise, entertain, exchanges and educate – continues to flourish.
