I’m not 100% sure it was the first time, but I remember a show in London at the Barbican touring with Ludovico Einaudi. That tour was a wonderful experience, and the impact with English audiences was superb. So attentive, passionate and enthusiastic about music! What do you like about performing in England? The average level of musical knowledge of English audiences is really high. Also, the consideration that music has culturally is so impressive. When I perform there, I just know they’re gonna ‘get’ what I do, rationally and emotionally. What have been the biggest challenges? Summer festivals are good, but getting to play in performing arts centres or live venues during the rest of the year is harder, financially, unless you’re already a big ticket-selling artist . What advice would you give other international musicians who want to perform in England? Visit England as much as you can (both physically and virtually, by reading magazines and newspapers), make yourself and your music known over there, collaborate with UK-based musicians, attend their festivals, perform at international showcase festivals attended by UK operators. Do you have a favourite gig that you’ve played in England? WOMAD was just a dream come true, but I have many favourite gigs, from my tours with Ludovico Einaudi, Justin Adams or my band Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino. For sure, our night at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms, with CGS and guests Justin Adams and Ballaké Sissoko, was one of the highlights and most beautiful experiences of my whole life and career.
