Venues SETTING THE SCENE GWENIFER RAYMOND Brighton American primitive-inspired guitarist What are your favourite venues to play in Brighton? There are a lot of great spots: Hope and Ruin, Green Door Store, The Prince Albert . Maybe my favourite is The Rose Hill, which is a proper co-op run spot a little off the beaten path, in a former pub down a residential street . It’s host to a varied catalogue of acts and puts on a lot of interesting and experimental shows. There’s even a little studio in the basement for artists to do residencies. What’s the best gig you’ve been to in the city? I’ve seen so much cool stuff around the city, from The Space Lady at The Rose Hill to Melt Banana at Patterns to Lovely Eggs at West Hill Hall to John Carpenter at The Dome. So I don’t know... maybe the time I saw the great Canadian band The Sadies at Sticky Mikes (RIP). I’d never heard them before, but a friend from NYC recommended them the day they were playing as ‘the best live band in the world.’ I decided to go and, you know, he wasn’t wrong. Favourite record shop? Resident is our big local independent store. In the past year though, a new place has opened: Family Store Records. It feels like the selection has been curated specifically for me, with offerings from reissue labels like Numero Group and Mississippi Records. I recently bought a whole stack of Master Wilburn Burchette vinyls.
