Venues SETTING THE SCENE J a c o b C r a f u r d RÍOGHNACH CONNOLLY Manchester Raised in Northern Ireland, now based in Manchester, Connolly is the frontwoman (and flautist) for The Breath, Honeyfeet and Lí Ban What are your favourite places to play in Manchester? I cut my teeth in Matt & Phreds and Band on the Wall; they are both still home away from home. The natural church acoustics in Holy Name; Gorton Monastery and Albert Hall are also delicious… but , if I’m honest , I still prefer a cosy session in my local Irish café/pub, BIA in Levenshulme. It’s as close to kitchen-table tunes as it comes on a Sunday afternoon. What’s the best gig you’ve been to in the city? The old Belgian embassy in Rusholme was thoroughly reappropriated into Antwerp Mansion and had a ‘secret folk club,’ that was real special. Alabaster DePlume’s Copernicus launch had hundreds of origami boats floating around the room, the launch of Pascal Makonese’s Don’t Start Me Talking had the band performing in the grand staircase. Also, Sigur Rós at [O2] Apollo – cried our eyes out . Favourite record shop? Vinyl Exchange or Piccadilly Records on Oldham Street . It was very emotional when I first saw our records go on sale there. Outside of Manchester, where do you like playing? Bristol Trinity is a huge, delicious sweatbox. Our epic friend Ben Capp does the sound and DJ Dad brings the vibe afterwards.
