WE HEAR THAT … Benjamin Bernheim will sing the title role in the revival of Les Contes d’Hoffmann, d. Damiano Michieletto, at Covent Garden in 2027-8 Asmik Grigorian will sing Carmen in Claus Guth’s new production of Bizet’s opera at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich in January 2028 Ermonela Jaho will sing the title role in Mascagni’s Iris at the Teatro Real in Madrid in October 2025 Peter Mattei will sing Abraham Lincoln in Missy Mazzoli’s Lincoln in the Bardo at the Metropolitan Opera in 2026-7 Stefano Poda will direct a new Dido and Aeneas to open Israeli Opera’s 2025-6 season, with Anat Czarny and Oded Reich in the title roles, c. Jean-Christophe Spinosi Jordan de Souza will conduct the first modern staging of Clémence de Grandval’s Mazeppa at Oper Dortmund in March 2026, d. Martin G. Berger, with Mandla Mndebele in the title role NEWSDESK Business of Opera summit Leaders from the operatic world gathered in London on October 10 for the first Business of Opera conference, convened by the Laidlaw Opera Trust. The keynote address was given by the Metropolitan Opera’s Peter Gelb, with other major speeches delivered by Marc Scorca of OPERA America and the businessman Keith Mills, who was President and CEO of London 2012, the organization behind London’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympic Games. As well as featuring many panel discussions, the day opened with the presentation (by Seb Wride) of a report commissioned by the Laidlaw Opera Trust from Public First, a strategic consultancy working to help organizations understand public opinion.
