Letter from the Editor Dear Idlers Welcome to our 99 th issue. Our cover st ar Dominic West explains why evil is boring. We follow Kate Morris’s week without WiFi on the North Devon coast, and learn about the crazy medieval life of writer Gervase of Tilbury. Troubadour Robin Timmis outlines the appeal of the busker’s life to the idle at heart, and Alex Johnson encounters the sensational diaries of Vivian MacKerrell, the original Withnail. When Stephen Bayley proposed an “Odium” column on lobster, he elucidated: “It will not be a hate-crime against individual crustaceans, but an assault on a gastronomic category.” Bayley has no objection to the lobsters themselves. It’s the way they are eaten that irks him. Stewart Lee puts the needle on the record, and Arthur Smith reveals his stoical technique for coping with diabetes – he calls it Dennis. Tim Richardson visits the mysterious Isokon building, Georgia Mann proposes a classical soundtrack for winter, Rachel Kelly cuts the crap and Virginia Ironside solves your problems. The merry old season of Christmas approacheth, and we have modestly proposed a few gift ideas in a special festive section. Thanks for reading. See you next time for issue 100. Live well, Tom b 3
