Romantically inclined
As I write, I am listening to the slow movement of Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto over the radio (beautifully played by Nikolai Lugansky with the CBSO). How can anyone not be moved by music that touches the heart so deeply? When selecting scores for each issue, I am aware that I lean towards Romantic composers (our house pianist Chenyin Li says, ‘Please give me some Classical or Baroque to learn!’). As a pianist, I know that this is the music I find most rewarding.
Cover artist Charles Owen evidently feels an affinity with Romantic-era composers such as Schumann. He enjoys engaging with many different composers and styles, from Bach to Jonathan Dove, but he’s fully at home with the many sides to Schumann’s creative identity, as he tells Peter Quantrill. Carnaval is one of the works on Owen’s new album of early works, and he generously shares some valuable playing tips on the 12th piece in the cycle, the fleeting and lyrical ‘Chopin’.
Schumann’s Carnaval also resonated deeply with Dame Myra Hess. Her 1938 recording is an outstanding example of her art, says her biographer Jessica Duchen. Hess was another pianist who played composers from the Baroque to her own time: when I listen to her poised interpretation of her transcription of Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, I find myself no less transported than I am by Rachmaninov. With its new research and fresh perspective, Duchen’s biography should return the spotlight to a pianist who was once one of the UK’s most celebrated musicians in any genre. The Scores section of this issue features a banquet of Romantic pieces: seven of them, ranging from Frank Bridge’s tender Berceuse (with expert guidance from Matthew Mills) to Schumann’s soaring Aufschwung (introduced by Lucy Parham). This repertoire demands a wide-ranging technical facility, from the softest of touches to the most brilliantly-executed double octaves: I leave you in the expert hands of Mark Tanner, with his masterclass on the Romantic style.
Finally, I am delighted to say that the cover album recordings are now available on YouTube (not only for this issue but older ones too). Click on the link below to listen to all the sheet music tracks. A world of pianistic romance awaits you!
