With Trump’s second term as US President off to a worrying start for the American culture sector, many of our colleagues across the pond will be wrestling with the question of whether to comment on the current political situation. Public comment of this kind often prompts demands not to ‘get political,’ but the fact is, art has always been inextricably linked to politics. In his guest column, arts consultant Mark Pemberton traces the link between these ‘uneasy bedfellows’ through the centuries. Andrew Mellor takes a different view of events, explaining in his Long View why he feels Europe, where cultural institutions are more reliant upon public funding, is at greater risk.
