Hedge find managers
NE of the best things about being into Land Rovers, and having mates I who are into Land Rovers, is the sheer number of opportunities for high jinks that present themselves out of the blue. A great example of this was a few weeks ago, when good pal and friend of LRM, lan Arthur from Howden Classic, rang me up to tell me about a Discovery 2 that one of his friends had asked him to move from the field it's been living in for the last six-plus years. I didn't need any persuading to spend a sunny Saturday morning trying to awaken the Td5 from its long slumber, so armed with a boot full of tools, a jack and a fully-charged battery, we set off into the Northamptonshire countryside in lan's Defender 110. The Discovery was in remarkably good condition, if a bit mossy and mouldy, and it was soon deemed well worth saving. A relative rarity these days, the only modifications we could find were some strangely-named budget tyres and a remapped engine ECU - the rest of this Bonatti Grey beauty is completely untouched. A blank canvas, or one to keep as Land Rover intended? It could go either way. they make such ideal bases for modifying into whatever you like to do. Take this month's cover star for instance - its owner, Simon Cox, has owned his Discovery from new, and slowly and carefully developed it into a fantastically capable greenlane explorer and camper that's still just as comfy and refined to drive on the road as a standard car, while upping its off-tarmac abilities in every aspect. It's a truly inspirational build, and highlights the importance of going out and using your Land Rover to find out which elements of it need improving, rather than instantly melting the credit card and potentially making it less pleasant to drive. There's tons of other great stuff in this issue too, including the heartwarming story of a young chap called Toby, who's been through some seriously testing stuff in his life, but finds peace and hope with his family in their Defender. Plus there's all the trustworthy tech and most exciting new products, reviews and classic Land Rover-related goodness you could ever ask for. Enjoy the issue.
