15Lata“Starlings” (excerpt) From Starlings (Exotic Pylon) Lata is Jacob Burns, a musician who also plays live electronics for Cindytalk. Starlings, due for release on Exotic Pylon, is an album that channels the desperate sentimentality of old Bollywood singers into the resonances of South London by rail.
13Icarus“Colour Field v500” (Wire Tapper edit) From Fake Fish Distribution (Not Applicable) From their sampler based deconstructions of drum ’n’ bass in the 1990s to the generative and improvised software genre-smashing that has characterised their more recent releases, Icarus have always carved their own distinctive, eclectic path through electronic music, an approach that has
16LA N D “Hotel Room” From Night Within (Important) L A N D is Daniel Lea and Matthew Waters, and their album – a vast collision of sound, from free brass and woodwind to ‘geometric’ bowed cymbals and metallic percussion – was sculpted in Reykjavik by Ben Frost.
Guest contributors include David Sylvian, Daniel O’Sullivan (Miracle, Ulver), Duke Garwood and many others. The duo describe this work as “approaching an apocalyptic noir narrative”, and cite the grey paintings of Gerhard Richter, the early postmodern detective stories of Paul Auster and the urban neon dislocation of Taxi Driver as points of inspiration.
19Gabriel Prokofiev & Peter Gregson “Tuff Strum” (Louis D’Heudieres Remix) From Cello Multitracks (Nonclassical) Gabriel Prokofiev is a London based composer and producer, whose music is strongly influenced by both contemporary composition and electronic dance music. “Tuff Strum” is taken from his new suite for nine multitracked cellos. All nine parts are performed by Peter Gregson, a 24 year old cellist who has recently premiered pieces by Steve Reich, Daniel Bjarnason and Scott Walker. This remix is by Louis D’Heudieres, an electroacoustic composer who explores intuitively generated forms derived from live electronic processes.
17Momus & John Henriksson “Futura Bold” From Thunderclown (Tona Serenad/American Patchwork) Veteran Scottish avant pop crooner Momus met Swedish vinyl-wrangler John Henriksson in Paris in 2010. Initially inspired by hiphop turntablism, Henriksson had assembled a collection of samples from obscure vinyl curiosities, then recruited musician friends in Paris and Stockholm to turn them into new compositions. This material was sent on to Osaka, where Momus added his own arrangements and vocals, pressing the ‘haunted archive’ back into service. The resulting album, Thunderclown, was released in 2011.
18Chra“Black Summer Blues vs II” From Shopping With Violence (Comfortzone) Chra is the alter ego of Viennese author, DJ, music addict and radio/TV presenter Christina Nemec. After a period experimenting with low frequencies and noise effects, Chra started to work on more club-friendly Minimal beats. Now she plays with sinewaves processed through a tape recorder and analogue and digital tools, sonically alluding to landscapes, territories, silence, extraordinary and extreme situations, challenges and post-industrial sites. As well as being a member of groups like SV DAMENKRAFT, Thermo-Fill and The App, she has made performance works with Lydia Lunch and runs her own label Comfortzone.
