I’m a New Internationalist Hideki Moro NGO worker, former NI Japan editor in chief In 1995, I was studying a politics course on ‘Alternative Development Strategies’ at graduate school in the Netherlands. The submission date for my thesis topic was looming, but I was struggling to find inspiration. Then I encountered New Internationalist. The magazine clearly illustrated the world in a way the mainstream media failed to do. I realized I needed to shift my focal point, that development work is not just about changing things in the Global South. Rather, there was plenty of work to be done to shift the way we do things in the North. The final title for my thesis was ‘Ambivalent Messages – Development Education and Attitudes of Northern People’. I followed it through with action: in 2001, I joined a team publishing a Japanese edition of New Internationalist. Although we closed NI Japan in 2011, we continue to spread the word online and through other publications because we believe that people in the North need some clues on action for change. Country Profile is one of my favourite sections. I never see analysis like it in other magazines. I also like Polyp’s cartoons, although sometimes it is hard for me to understand if there is a Western joke. You can detect the seriousness in the image but the cartoon is wrapped in some kind of cynicism. I think this makes it stronger. ■ Are you a New Internationalist?
