Norah Wellings motto 'quality not quantity' was one she rigidly
adhered to. A perfectionist, her factory, The Victoria Toy Works,
employed 250 workers but Norah was the sole designer. Her
trademark cloth dolls were made from felt, stockinette or
velveteen with moulded faces. Their lively expressions and
varied costumes made them a worldwide success.
In 1959, following the death of her brother and business
partner, Leonard Wellings, Norah closed her toy factory.
Uncompromising to the end, she destroyed her designs and
remaining stock in a huge bonfire and by doing so protected
her legacy and prevented the production of inferior dolls. •••
