EDWARD PEARCE, after writing about politics in the Telegraph and The Sunday Times, now writes regular columns in the Guardian and New Statesman & Society, as well as irregularly in the Standard. His current labour is on an update of Machiavelli for Gollancz, possibly to be called Machiavelli's Children, about Thatcher, Reagan, Bush and the rest of them.

CLAUS VON BULOW won a Master of Arts degree at Trinity College, Cambridge. He is a retired Barrister-at-law in the Middle Temple.

LAURA CUMMING, a former Deputy Editor of Literary Review who now works for the Meridian programme on the BBC World Service, once read English at Oxford which may explain her passion for the ghastly, lice-ridden Merton Professor .

DAVID CHIPP, former Editor in Chief of the Press Association, sits on the Press Complaints Commission which recently condemned press reporting on the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales as an 'odious exhibition'. Among his colleagues on the commission were Brian Hitchen , Editor of the Daily Star, and Patsy Chapman, Editor of the News of the World , who seemed to dissent.

JAMES STEVENS CURL, Professor of Architecture at Leicester University has just published Classical Architecture from B T Batsford, which will be reviewed shortly. His The Art and Architecture of Freemasonry was published last year, to resounding acclaim .
