SOUNDS OF AMERICA I I A N N M A S T R O R O G E R : P H O T O G R A P H Y THE SCENE This month, operatic highlights include The Barber of Seville in Chicago and Billy Budd in Brooklyn, plus Pierre Boulez returns to conduct in Cleveland and Murray Perahia plays Schumann in Boston CHICAGO, IL Lyric Opera of Chicago The Barber of Seville (February 1-28) The Olivier Award-winning director and choreographer Rob Ashford offers his take on Rossini’s The Barber of Seville. Ashford is known for big-budget Broadway and West End hits (Evita, A Streetcar Named Desire, Shrek), so the production promises to be lavish entertainment. It features a youthful cast of singers, with baritone Nathan Gunn as Figaro, mezzo Isabel Leonard as Rosina, and tenor Alek Shrader as Almaviva. Alessandro Corbelli, one of the world’s best interpreters of the comic character demanded of opera buffa, plays the befuddled Bartolo, and Italian maestro Michele Mariotti conducts. lyricopera.org BOSTON, MA Boston Symphony Orchestra Perahia plays Schumann; Stucky revisits Purcell (February 6-11) The Boston Symphony Orchestra’s conductor laureate Bernard Haitink presents Schumann’s Piano Concerto with Murray Perahia as soloist. This is followed by Brahms’s Symphony No 4. The programme opens with Steven Stucky’s Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary, after Purcell (1992), an arrangement by the American composer of music that Purcell originally wrote for the funeral of Queen Mary II in 1695. Haitink brings the whole concert to Carnegie Hall on February 11. bso.org KANSAS CITY, MO Kansas City Symphony Leon Fleisher plays Ravel (February 7-9) If any pianist knows Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, it’s Leon Fleischer who, he reckons, must have performed the piece more than 1000 times. With music director Michael Stern leading, this programme opens with Leonard Bernstein’s On the Waterfront Suite, a melodramatic and jazzy portrayal evoking scenes from the 1954 Marlon Brando movie. Concluding the concert, there’s Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade, a symphonic suite based on tales from the 1001 Nights. Fleisher also holds a masterclass on the morning of February 8. kcsymphony.org EVENT OF THE MONTH Pierre Boulez conducts the Cleveland Orchestra HOUSTON, TX Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra Rouse and Rachmaninov (from February 8) The Shepherd School of Music – based in Houston, Texas, at Rice University – embarks on its first East Coast tour, showcasing its world-class music faculty members who serve as soloists. The celebrated violinist Cho-Liang Lin performs Christopher Rouse’s Violin Concerto, which Lin premiered in 1992. Also on the programme is Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with Jon Kimura Parker, professor of piano at the Shepherd School, as soloist. After two nights in Houston, the tour stops at Baltimore’s Meyerhoff Symphony Hall on February 15, and then Carnegie Hall in New York on February 18. music.rice.edu BROOKLYN, NY Brooklyn Academy of Music Glyndebourne Festival’s Billy Budd (February 7, 9, 11 & 13) The Benjamin Britten centenary celebrations continue with this US premiere of yet another masterpiece opera by the British composer: Billy Budd. Following the unveiling of this atmospheric new gramophone.co.uk CLEVELAND, OH The Cleveland Orchestra Classic Boulez (February 6-16) Pierre Boulez returns to the Cleveland Orchestra to conduct two sets of concerts that feature early-20th-century works. In the first, Boulez juxtaposes two very different pieces by Schoenberg, Verklärte Nacht – the late-Romantic sound of the composer in 1899 – with his lesser-known Accompaniment to a Cinematographic Scene from 1829, with the composer in a stark, more experimental mode. Alongside these pieces, there’s Bartók’s Violin Concerto No 2 with Nikolaj Znaider as soloist. In the second set of concerts, entitled ‘A French Wayfarer’, Boulez creates an intriguing programme of work around Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer. Works by Ravel and Debussy, including La mer, will surely scintillate with Boulez, ‘the French Wayfarer’, at the helm. clevelandorchestra.com production in 2010 – and more recent revivals – Glyndebourne is bringing its renowned cast and chorus stateside, led by Sir Mark Elder who conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Directed by Michael Grandage, the all-male cast stars South African baritone Jacques Imbrailo in the title-role and Mark Padmore and Brindley Sherratt as Captain Vere and Claggart. This surely promises to be the highlight of Brooklyn Academy of Music’s spring season. bam.org NEW YORK, NY Carnegie Hall Jonas Kaufmann Recital (February 20) There’s no doubt that Jonas Kaufmann is one of the most sought-after tenors on the opera stage these days. He’s proved himself a versatile singer able to run the gamut from lyrical Mozart to the dramatic demands of Wagner and Verdi. His much anticipated Carnegie Hall recital debut, with pianist Helmut Deutsch, is yet another indication of the arrival of this bankable star, and an opportunity to see him shine on the concert stage. carnegiehall.org Previews by Damian Fowler GRAMOPHONE JANUARY 2014 VII
