CARDINAL-DESIGNATE Vincent Nichols has said he wants Pope Francis’s “posi- tive spirit and joy in being a Catholic” to “spread right through” the Church in England and Wales. The Archbishop of Westminster, who was named a cardinal on Sunday, told The Catholic Herald that Francis was “making the call to a Catholic life attrac- tive” and “that’s what I would love to see” in the English Church. In an interview at Archbishop’s House, Westminster, on Monday the
He also said he wanted Catholics in England and Wales to “absolutely absorb” the Pope’s apostolic exhorta- tion Evangelii Gaudium.
cardinal-designate said that Francis’s vision of a “poor Church for the poor” means “that each one of us realises our dependence on God”. “I’d like to see every parish absorbing that document,” he said. “It’s an evan- gelical document, not an ecclesiastical document, because it is a call for each of us to renew our relationship with the Lord.” Pope Francis announced the names of 19 new cardinals after his Angelus address on Sunday. He will present them with their red hats at a consistory of cardinals at the Vatican on February 22. me, it’s humbling. This is a position of weight and significance in the Universal Church. Please ask people to pray for He praised the Pope for the inspiration “he is bringing to the Church [which] is quite remarkable, as anyone can see”. He said the reason Francis has had such a great impact was “hard to pinpoint”, but he said it was clear that the Holy Father was “absolutely, unremittingly, wholeheart- edly an exponent of the faith of the Church and the great vision of the faith”.
Archbishop Nichols said: “There wasn’t a lot of warning. ‘Surprise’ is not quite the right word. There’s been plenty of chat and gossip that this would happen, but I didn’t find out that much before you did.

“It is another step in my journey as a priest. I hope everyone will pray for me as I take on these new responsibilities. I am deeply moved by the honour. For The cardinal-designate said: “As a boy I met and had a brief conversation with Cardinal Godfrey, and Cardinal Heenan I knew reasonably well, and Cardinal Hume extremely well. It’s something to see that I take my place in the line.” “On the other hand,” he said, “he’s a great realist. He knows about the reality of human living. He’s not afraid to talk about He echoed Francis’s appeal to priests to keep churches open outside Mass times. “If parishes are able to absorb what Pope Francis says, then he says he would like to see the churches open. Not only is the Church an open door, but parish churches should have their doors open,” he said. “But I understand there are practical issues in that.”
He said: “A Church of the poor is one of people who know that by themselves they can’t do much – the opposite of the self-sufficient Church. It’s a Church that knows its failings and knows the mercy of God, and therefore knows where its energy really comes from.”

AROUND 50 new Catholic churches have been built in the Czech Republic, regarded as Europe’s most atheistic coun- try, since the 1989 collapse of Communism, the daily Lidové
noviny has reported.
Most of them have been built in Moravia, in the east of the country, including 19 new churches in the Olomouc diocese in the north of the region. The Czech Republic has the lowest proportion of believers in the whole of Europe and very low church attendance, which has barely recovered since the downfall of Communism. In Prague, two new Catholic churches have been built along with three church community centres.
Brno diocese’s vicar general Jiří Mikulasek said a chur ch should be the “centre of life” in a community. “This is why a lot of churches are now bei ng built at housing estates ,” he sai
