Editor’s letter
52Classic comfort food
Due to the amazing amount of time and effort it takes the team of writers, designers and printers to produce Sainsbury’s magazine, I’m writing this letter at the end of November before all the Christmas festivities have really begun. However, I know that by the time this issue goes on sale that, along with the rest of the nation, I will have overindulged in the usual way and be regretting the fact that my favourite jeans don’t fit quite like they should. And, along with everyone else, I will be looking for ways to cut back on the calories while still enjoying my food. We’ve been noticing a growing trend among foodies and nutrition pioneers – rather than drastic ‘lose a stone in four weeks’ diets, the attitude is more about changing the way we eat permanently. This includes cooking more from scratch; increasing the amount of fruit and veg on our plates; cutting back on meat and dairy produce, refined sugars and grains such as wheat;
65Aporridge makeover and including ‘hot’ new ingredients such as quinoa, pulses and sugar alternatives like maple syrup and agave nectar. That’s why you’ll find delicious low-sugar bakes, a tempting vegetarian menu and tasty new ways with porridge filling these pages. We hope you enjoy them and would love to hear whether you notice a difference in how you feel when eating this way – and whether it has an effect on your waistline, too. However, there is also a place for classic comfort food and Tom Kerridge’s tempting rich dishes on page 52 are just what we’ll be craving on a chilly Sunday afternoon – followed by a slice of caramel apple cake (page 87). After all, a little of what you fancy does you good, too…
PS... Our Valentine’s special
(page 24) is full of romantic ideas – and these heels from Dorothy Perkins, £29, are a date-night bargain.
