He continues to work on The Wagner style as well as on an extended series of essays, British music after Britten. A companion-piece to the present essay is ‘A tale of two brothers: the giants and The Ring ’ (The Wagner Journal vol.6 no.1, March 2012). maria euchner teaches German studies in the Department of Languages, Literature and Linguistics at York University, Toronto.

kerry mccarthy teaches at Duke University. She is currently writing a book on Byrd for Oxford University Press. john harley is the author of several books and articles about William Byrd. His latest volume, The world of William Byrd: musicians, merchants and magnates, was published by Ashgate in 2010. alan howard is Lecturer in Music at the University of East Anglia. His publications include articles in Music & Letters and The Ashgate research companion to Henry Purcell and, forthcoming, a volume of Odes on the death of Henry Purcell in the Purcell Society Edition Companion Series. ian bartlett was formerly Senior Lecturer in Music at Goldsmiths College London. He has recently published William Boyce: a tercentenary source-book and compendium (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2011). simon fleming teaches in the Music Department of Durham University and is currently writing a book on the music of Charles Avison snr. andrew thomson is author of monographs on Widor (1987) and d ’Indy (1996), both published by Oxford University Press. peter phillips is Director of Music at Merton College, Oxford, and of The Tallis Scholars. peter williams is enlarging his recent biography of JS Bach, published in English by Cambridge UP and in German by Osburg Verlag.
