LETTER TO THE EDITOR Chad pipeline inaccuracies Francois M isser's story regarding the Chad oil development project in your February issue contains errors that require correction. First, the story headline is misleading in its reference to a blockage of the pipeline project. The last paragraph of the story, which contradicts the headline, more accurately reflects the facts in stating that the project is 'expected to go ahead.' The World Bank has not yet agreed to p r o v id e lo a n s to C h ad and C am e ro o n . I t is e x p e c t e d th a t th e d irectors of The World Bank will not make a decision on the Bank's participation until som etim e late this sum mer. In addition, this story erroneously states that the number of construction-related jobs will be 2,000 workers, as well as some 600 truck drivers. A later mistaken reference indicates that 400 jobs will be generated by the project. In fact, the project is expected to g e n e r a te 4 ,6 0 0 jo b s in C h ad and Cameroon during construction. T h e p a r a g r a p h on th e S e d ig i/ SEERAT energy project also contains a num ber of in accu racies. The con so r t ium w o u ld d ev e lo p th e S e d ig i o il f ie ld . S e p a r a te ly , a p ip e l in e w ou ld transport the oil to the capital city of N 'D jam ena, and a refin ery would be constru c ted there to p ro cess the oil. P lease note that the consortium w ill not be participating in operation of the expanded pow er generating s ta tion . Also, the generating station is located in N 'D jam ena, not at Sedigi. I sh o u ld a ls o add th a t th e Sedigi/SEERAT energy project is not a rew a rd to the g overnm en t , as your story states. Rather, it will result in a major im provem ent in the quality of life for many Chadian c itiz en s .
