UPFRONT / SUPPORT Imagine a world where every family was supported and nurtured by their community, and where breastfeeding was a normal part of life HAVE YOU LATCHED ON! PHOTORAPHY IFE LOF : TREE PHOTO THE BIG LATCH ON (31 JULY AND 1 AUGUST) is a fun, global event, which takes place during World Breastfeeding Week. It involves groups of breastfeeding women coming together at locations around the world to all breastfeed their child or children at a set time. All of the children are latched on for one minute at the set time and are counted by witnesses. Numbers are added to a global total to try and beat the previous year’s record. In 2005, Women's Health Action group ran the first Big Latch On as part of World Breastfeeding Week in New Zealand. In 2010, Joanne Edwards of Small Beginnings Group introduced the campaign in Portland, Oregon. Originally from England, Joanne has been working with families for nearly 15 years and is passionate about providing support, time and advice to enable families to discover their own parenting styles and achieve their goals. ‘I want us to create a world where every family is supported and nurtured by their community and where breastfeeding is an ordinary part of life. My vision is to grow the Big Latch On until every family can walk to a location in their neighbourhood.’ Want to take part? Find events near you at thebiglatchon.org. MAKE IT WORK This year World Breastfeeding Week centres around mothers and work. Find out more at worldbreastfeedingweek.org. Now in its 22nd year, the week-long campaign aims to "raise awareness of the health benefits of breastfeeding, increase social acceptance of breastfeeding and promote support for breastfeeding".
