About Magma Magma is distinct from other poetry magazines because each issue has a different editor. The editorship circulates among the group that runs the magazine, with an occasional guest editor.
Each editor brings his or her particular interests to bear, resulting in poems and emphases that no one else in the group could have predicted.
The group is united by its commitment to the best in contemporary poetry, whether from new or little-known poets or the more established. We look for poems which give a direct sense of what it is to live today—honest about feelings, alert about the world, sometimes funny, always well crafted.
Magma includes reviews of current publications and thought-
provoking prose. The views expressed are those of the individual authors. Magma seeks to be a forum for debate, not to present a single Magma view.
We publish three times a year in spring, summer and winter, with a selection of poems and articles on our website.
Magma 57 is edited by Ian McEwen and Hannah Lowe. Ian teaches philosophy and promotes the Ouse Muse open mic. His first collection Intermittent beings was recently published by Cinnamon. Hannah published a pamphlet, The Hitcher, with The Rialto in 2011. Her full collection, Chick, from Bloodaxe, has been shortlisted for the 2013 Fenton Aldeburgh First Collection Prize.
The launch reading for Magma 57 is at 8pm on Monday 18th November in the Coffee-House Poetry series at the Troubadour, 265 Old Brompton Road, London SW5 (email CoffPoetry@aol.com). The nearest tube station is Earls Court. Admission is the usual Coffee-House charge of £8 (£7 concessions). The guest readers are Patience Agbabi and Chris McCabe as well as many other contributors.
Magma 58 (March 2014) is edited by Laurie Smith with Richard Morris. The theme is the music of words. Contributions are welcome from 1 July to 30 September 2013 — please see our website.
Magma 59 (June 2014) is edited by Roberta James with Alex Pryce. The theme is breaks. Contributions are welcome from 1 November 2013 to 31 January 2014 — our website has more information. We are grateful to Arts Council England for supporting us with funding for our development projects.

Contributing to Magma You are welcome to send us up to six unpublished poems on a single email or, if you live in the UK, by post. We regret we are unable to accept more than one email or postal submission per issue. All contributions by email are acknowledged on receipt. Postal submissions are not acknowledged until a decision is made.
Deadlines are the end of January, end of June and end of September. Poems are considered for one issue only.
Email poems should be in the body of the email, unless they are layout-sensitive when all the poems should be included in a single attached file.
